First, the reasons are structural — "manufacturing support no longer available" (TI, Microchip), fab closure (Cirrus Logic), portfolio rationalization (Infineon, ST) — meaning these parts are not coming back. Second, several notices offer no replacement at all, which is exactly the scenario that pushes buyers into the open market.

Chip Shortage and Lead-Time Statistics, 2026

Obsolescence is hitting while the broader supply chain tightens dramatically. According to Tom's Hardware, data centers will consume about 70% of all memory chips made in 2026 — versus 20–30% in 2022 — while DRAM supply grows only 16% and NAND 17%, well below the historical 20–30% norm. According to TrendForce, 1Q26 conventional DRAM contract prices jumped a record 90–95% quarter-on-quarter (PC DRAM more than doubled; server DRAM rose about 90%), NAND rose 55–60%, and 2Q26 is forecast to add another 58–63% for DRAM and 70–75% for NAND, with meaningful new capacity not arriving until late 2027–2028.

Lead times confirm the strain. According to Baird's lead-time monitor (reported by Investing.com, April 2026), DDR5 and LPDDR5 DRAM both sit at 41 weeks — the highest in Baird's dataset — with Xilinx FPGAs at 40 weeks, Diodes Inc. parts at 37 weeks, MPS DC-DC converters at 33 weeks, and MOSFETs averaging 25 weeks. According to independent distributor J2 Sourcing, 14 semiconductor and passive suppliers announced price increases in April 2026 alone, ST MCU lead times stretched to 55 weeks, and SK Hynix has warned wafer tightness could persist to 2030 with a roughly 20% supply gap. ECIA's February 2026 Industry Pulse survey found only 5% of respondents reporting falling semiconductor lead times (2% for electromechanical parts), with some MCUs already past 20 weeks.

Pricing pressure extends across categories: according to TrendForce, Murata raised prices 15–35% on AI-server, automotive and RF MLCCs from April 1, 2026 (an NVIDIA VR200 NVL72 rack uses roughly 600,000 MLCCs, over 30% more than GB300), Samsung Electro-Mechanics weighed a double-digit MLCC hike, and ADI raised analog prices 10–30% (average ~15%) from February 2026 following TI's earlier 10–30% increase. The root cause is structural: according to TrendForce, AI memory (HBM + GDDR7) will absorb about 20% of global DRAM wafer capacity in 2026, and according to Tom's Hardware, each gigabyte of HBM consumes roughly 4× the wafer capacity of standard DRAM. The Counterfeit Trap in Obsolete Sourcing

Obsolete parts are where counterfeiters live. According to ERAI's 2024 data, suspect counterfeit and nonconforming part reports hit 1,055 — up 25% and a nine-year high. According to ERAI's 2025 annual report (via Astute Group), reports eased to 748, but 60.02% of reported counterfeits were obsolete parts, roughly 24% of suspect counterfeits passed purely electrical testing, and 23.37% of faked brands were newly targeted that year — including Raspberry Pi and Supermicro. Electrical test alone is not enough; decapsulation, X-ray and traceability checks matter most precisely on EOL parts.

What Buyers Should Do: A 5-Step EOL Response Process

  • 1. Audit your BOM proactively. With 52% of EOL events carrying no PCN (Z2Data), waiting for notifications means discovering obsolescence after stock is gone. Review lifecycle status quarterly.
  • 2. Act inside the LTB window. Size last-time-buy orders against remaining product life plus safety stock — and remember most LTB orders are NCNR.
  • 3. Qualify the manufacturer's suggested alternate first (e.g., OPA828 for OPA627, CLRC66303HNK for MFRC522, AT45DB041E for AT45DB041D) — it is the cheapest path when one exists.
  • 4. For parts past LTB, source only through channels with testing and traceability. The ERAI numbers above are the reason.
